my theme song

I'm working on putting together some theme music. I'd like a song to play when I enter the room...just to set the mood for - Sean's here!

I don't want - Sean's here?
I certainly don't want - Sean's here....

I want something with a little pep. Not cheesy-overly dramatic. I'd like some drums for sure, some bass, something with a little energy....just not too over the top.

Af first I'm thinking about the best song of all time - The Duke of Earl - but I just don't think that gets me in the door the way I'd like to enter. So I'm not just going to go with my favorite songs, I really just want to convey the fact that I'm now here.

Someone once said to me that you either breathe life into a room or suck it out. I've been around both kinds of people and been both kinds. I'd probably rather breathe than suck...that's just how I'd like to do it. Pessimists tend to suck it out, optimists tend to breathe it. I lean cynic, realist, pragmatist and pessimist. It's part of my core. It's how I was raised. I was literally taught it. I'd like to unlearn it.

I want to breathe life into conversations. I want to speak life into other's lives. I want to inspire. I want to encourage. I want to lift up and not push down.

Maybe I'll play something that's early Abba. Definitely cheesy, but maybe good for a laugh...and people secretly kind of dig their beat....

  1. oooo...i love abba. you could play "does your mother know" especially when entering rooms with high school kids. but i guess you don't do that so much anymore.

hmmm...what about that "allstar" song. it is peppy. and you are an allstar. that is an option.

OR your all time favorite billy idol song...wasn't it "white wedding". would intimidate people and then you could surprise them with your welcoming spirit.

just some thoughts. on a more serious note...LOVE the idea of breathing life into a room and into people's lives. i think the Lord is so into that. He will do it for you, just let him know you are willing. i think as believers we natually do that way more than we even know. cause when we walk into a room we bring him with us.

now...back to your theme song...what about "stand" by REM...that is peppy! : )

  2. How about "Hail to the Chief"?
    or ~

"It's my Party and I'll Cry if I want to"?

    maybe ~
The theme jingle for Burger King..."Have it Your Way"...

Or you could do what Matthew McConahay does..he plays bongos in the nude..that would breathe SOME kind of life to your party!

Here is my question, how do we go from being a cynic, pragmatist, pessimist (which I am all of) to being sure we are breathing life into a room? How do we go from seeing things and not getting beat down by them and not letting them affect us and walking around like Eeyore? If you guys could answer that, it'd save Sean and I a ton in therapy bills.

Duke of Earl breaths life into the room. It's classic, and therefore consistently young. The fact that you're talking about the freaking Duke, for one, with the in-your-face base part commands respect and shows dominance. Youngsters love it. Helps consolidate a self-image of "I can be powerful too". Yet it's classic and modestly cheesey because it's got doo-wop flava, so it belies its own power when it needs to be fun and inoffensive.

Most importantly, it's got Murph written all over it, right? So it's genuine, which is always immediately apparent and fun. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't it worked for a long time already.

All else fails, there's always "More Than Words".

  8. Don't forget "pure energy." You could even go with the club mix, of course your room intro would be 10 minutes long.

I did a funeral this year for a guy that made it very clear he wanted "like a rock" by Bob Seger played at his funeral. It went something like this... "Amen, and now Richard would like you to hear the imortal words of Bob Seger, followed by something from a Proverb, or a Psalm."
