it's getting a little cold outside

I love it when it goes from summer to early fall and you can wear shorts and a sweatshirt. That's just about perfect for me. The only downside to that is when I first wake up. In the mornings our house feels about 10 below and I'm not sure how to fix that. You have the air on in the middle of the day when it's feeling hot out...but want the heat on for the mornings.

Annie likes the place to be cold at night...and so do I, but she thinks it's not cold until my nose is running and the kids start to turn blue. Two houses ago I figured I had this solved by buying one of those fancy digital thermostats. You just put the temperature on there that you'd like your house to be at, and bingo presto....it regulates the temp.

It didn't really work like that. You'd put the temp on and then you'd still have to choose air conditioning or heat. It was just a fancier version of the old dial thermostat I had.

This is what I need - I need a digital thermostat that would turn on the heat or the air conditioning as needed. I'd set it for 70 degrees, maybe the air conditioning kicks on, and then the heat would kick on around 5:30 in the morning.
Problem solved.

I'm actually typing this with mittens on right now.

Did I mention how silly PBS is?

  1. I saw an educational segment on PBS where they showed you how to modify your thermostat to do just that thing with a paper clip but I changed the channel to "Who wants to be Americas funniest home rock star" before they got to it because I missed all the commercials and life enriching programming. I wish there was some way I could pay $35 a month for that.

  2. Hy Murph, I hate to break it to you, but they do make one of those fancy digital thermostats that can be programmed to respond in the way you want. I don't know how to put links in comment fields, so I'll copy the URL for Lowe's thermostat page below. Enjoy the goodness of prorammable Conditioned Air and Heat in the same day without doing anything!

  4. I think this may be a first where I actually read a comment that had usable info. In the end I still would rather hear from the "ignorant communist slut commentator"

Hey, without NPR we would not have Schwetty Balls. Public radio mets profit TV & everyone wins.

  5. in weather like this just leave your windows open...then the temp in your house will be perfect...just like it is outside!

  6. I don't have to pay for commercials....go get tivo Bogart.

    Bragg,
it's like you're telling me to just go run a 4 minute mile (or in my case, a 15 minute mile) I can barely tie my shoes, let alone install electic stuff (and I couldn't make the link work...that's how dumb I am)

Are we really paying for heating that the Earth basically provides for free? Is it really worth it to have a heater in your house when in very important parts of it (like the refrigerator parts) we actually want it COLDER than we actually want it? And what about those airlines? Have you seen these guys? Is this a rhetorical post?

Also, of course you have to pay for commericals, foo. You pay for that shite every time you buy a MACH X ultra-razr-sex-enhancer-jet-attracter-rock-yer-sox-off shaving product. That's the beauty of it! You think you're not paying for it! Oh, but you're paying for it. You have cable with 1400 channels (most of which you don't use or need, to the point where you wonder if PBS should be done away with), and a TiVo, which you were living a happy life without 5 years ago. Marketing works, as proven by supply and demand. You are definitely paying for it.

  8. there's a world of difference between choosing to pay and being forced to pay.

  9. Ok so I get it. All I have to do is pay for tivo to remove the commercials from the programming that I'm paying for. Perfect. Sign me up. I didn't realize there was a way to pay even more money. I can't believe this whole time I have been letting the government steal a buck a year from me for that crappy TV network.

This has become more of a personal campaign for me to get everyone to stop paying a monthly fee for commerical cable or sattelite TV. In the immortal words of Gallagher; "I'm mad as hell people, you just don't get it".
Just think if we all stopped paying for cable or sattelite TV they would very quickly give it away for free so that they could get the advertising dollars that they are already raking in. Now that is some supply side economics. Don Regan and Ralph Nader could both get behind something like that. (Is Don Regan still alive? If not then just insert Ronald Reagan in there). Then we would all have the 9 cents to spare a month for schwetty balls programming that I so dearly love. As a matter of fact Murph I'll give you a buck this weekend and the problem is solved.

  10. I posted that before I saw that Sean was already being teamed up on. Ok I'm backing down. Never corner Murph. I've seen him playfully put a mans face in the carpet with just his thumb and ring finger while calmly carrying on a conversation with someone else.

  12. see my previous comment (choice does not equal being forced)

I'm just saying that if half the people in the US are paying 9 cents a year because some people don't like commercials, or they happen to like the shows....and aren't satisfied with the four free channels and hundreds of free radio stations...(really?) why are we paying that?
It'd be 150 million dollars a year- if half of the folks living here paid 9 cents a month.

that shouldn't go to schools, highways, my vacation fund? It should to to FREAKING TV!!!

  13. I think we're all missing the point here.

    The Steelers suck.

  14. I know at Worthington (home of the cardinals) [hand on heart] they probably had their own TV station in the school, but at my high school we watched programming from PBS all the time. Can I get a shout out for Julius Sumner Miller. Where would I be without the inspiration of that mad genious. Ok I'd be hear but I wouldn't know how to unsuccessfully power a hot wheel with the kinetic energy of a rubber band.

  15. Holy Crap!? That was junior high not high school. phew I was worried for a second that maybe my bus was short for for reasons other than my proximity to the school.

  16. The Steelers don't suck it's just that this year the Bengals are better.
I've got to get to work. It's been nice aggravating everyone especially those of you who use spellcheck.

  18. Hellz yeah Julius Sumner Miller. That guy was a mad scientist if ever there was one. You know that within 4.7 minutes his shirt would be dripping from his own schwett.

Or better yet, when his experiments wouldn't work and he's ask you to figure out why they didn't work...

PBS could be my dad if they brought back the reruns of his show

    Yeah. . .

    I see your point. . .

Certainly we have a choice. I mean, capitalism (and Christianity, for that matter) are built around free will, right? And sure, just because some ad company finds a way to control what we think we know about shaving, and indeed, changes the face of shaving forever, linking the smoothness of a great shave to flying a jet (code for "potency", which is code for "sex"), neon blue and orange power levels combining to form maximum Voltron-esque power (code for "potency", code for "sex"), and hot chicks licking my face ("sex", code for "sex"), and just because since I've been a Mach X guy my grades have improved, I'm dating a Ben-gal, benching 250, and driving a Dodge Stratus. . .what was I saying?

    the steelers do suck.

12 league championships, greatest coach of all time, cheese heads, and brett favre to a lousy 6 championships for the steelers and a coach who FINALLY got one, and a qb who likes to smash back windshields with his face.
    (game, set, match Packers, baby)

  21. So paying taxes should be voluntary? Or are we saying we should only pay taxes for the things that we subjectively and individually value?

Actually, all sarcasm aside. What if they gave us all a page long checklist of categories that you chose your taxes to go to? There would be a base of taxes that goes to the important infrastructure of maintaining a society automatically and then the checklist for the remainder. Some people would choose to give most everything to the military and defense, most people except the truly nihilistic would probably choose to give at least some to health care rather than let the poor and old die in the streets, some people would choose to give most to the arts, some to medical and/or scientific research, etc. But I have a feeling in the end it would all even out. Well, except for the military and defense because that is an amazing number that is not even comprehendable. But I guess everyone would at least feel like their money was going to something they valued even though it would have almost exactly the same allocations that it has now.

I think the way they do it now is easier though.
Unless of course we just don't want to pay taxes and that is certainly easier. It'll be great driving around through the raw sewage on dirt roads littered with the bodies of dead and dying for the rest of our lives. It'll be quaint, kind of like living in the 1200s. Life was so much easier back then.
Ok I really am done for the day.

  22. I like the decision making on taxes thing -

and Packers fan - You actually can give the Steelers a run for their money in this argument, but I wasn't arguing with you or your team that is rated as the worst team in the nfl right now

they used to be great though...

    Yeah,

I don't know that I trust a good chunck of the populace to make decisions on how the governement spends money. And by this I mean myself. What do I know about national defense? It's expensive and important, and that's it. Plus, as far as fiscal responsibility in this country goes, did you know that a huge percent of people defined as "poor" live below the poverty line? And did you know that just under 50% of Americans make less than the national average income? I mean, what does that say?
